The complexity of neuroanatomy is such that adequate coverage leaves little space for clinical conditions. Conversely most disease based texts dare to presume neuroanatomical knowledge that is often insufficient. The authors claim that this volume is unique fails to recognise many similar attempts in the last 25 years but also ignores a tradition started by Bing in 1909 and continued by Brodal in 1946. It is essential to judge this book on the neuroanatomical content, looking in particular for novel ways of presenting very complex material and to assess the strength of the accompanying clinical content.
The layout is fairly traditional, starting with a section on neuro-embryology, followed by neuronal structure and function and then, from the spinal cord, ascending to the cerebral cortex over six chapters. The peripheral CNS, the autonomic CNS and spinal nerves are then
