About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover design  Brain regions showing abnormal activity in manic patients when they perform a gambling task. In this task, they risk points betting on whether a yellow token is hidden behind a red or a blue box. In the top display, the decision is more difficult due to the smaller ratio of red to blue boxes (4 : 2) compared with the lower row (5 : 1). Increasing difficulty led to abnormally high activity in anterior cingulate cortex in a group of manic, but not of depressed patients. (Scan taken at the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre.)
