Glutamate has been implicated as a mediator of tissue injury in Multiple Sclerosis. However, lack of glutamate receptor expression in human oligodendrocytes and their resistance to AMPA toxicity should be considered. According to this study, human oligodendrocytes do not express AMPA receptors in situ and glial expression of these is limited to astrocytes. Human brain sections were immunostained for GluR2/3 (red) followed by further staining for GFAP, a marker for astrocytes. Grey matter expressing AMPA receptor is seen in yellow. The picture shows Hoeschst nuclear staining (blue). From 'Resistance of oligodendrocytes to AMPA/kainate receptor-mediated glutamate injury' by K. Wosik et al., pp. 2636-2648.
