COVER ILLUSTRATION. Synaptophysin and green fluorescent protein (GFP) staining of hypertrophic axonal swellings in the proximal optic nerve. Swellings correlate with growth arrest in optic nerves treated with brain-derived neurotrophic factor and lens injury and are filled with numerous vesicular bodies, disorganized neurofilaments and degenerating organelles. Background shows GFP-positive axons converging at the optic disc in whole-mounted rat retinas (from Pernet and DiPolo pp. 1014–1026).
